about

There’s an old joke in the logging industry that 9 to 5 are the odds of survival and not the hours worked. My hope is that this composition reflects the sentiment. I started this project in December of 2017 and finished my recordings in early March of 2018. When I began my work I established three important goals: I was going to base the project off of William Dietrich's non-fiction book "The Final Forest", I was going to incorporate elements of bricolage, and I wanted the composition to represent three differing perspectives in relation to the ecological crisis in the Pacific Northwest’s old growth forest.

I hand-built several instruments for this composition and as I wrote the lyrics, I included locations, phrases, and concepts I’ve studied over the past seven months in the fields of eco-music, eco-poetics, gastro-poetics, and political ecology. These disciplines were instrumental in helping this morbid reflection come to life and will hopefully continue to help shed some light on the darkness of the issues we face as a global collective.

As the timber baron Frederick Weyerhauser said on his deathbed,

“Cut’em low boys, cut’em low.”

A huge thanks to the people who fight to keep our forests and animals protected and a show of paradoxical gratitude towards the laborers who risk their lives every day to provide an essential resource that is at the core of our most basic comforts and shelter.

May we all find a balance.
